"Whale Effigy Box"
   by Gerard Tsonakwa, Abenaki

Steatite whale effigies have been found in many places in Maritime Canada and New England.  They are attributed to the "Red Ochre Culture," circa 1000 BC to 300 AD, which are believed to be ancestral Algonkians.   Our people hunted whales off-shore and salvaged whales on beaches in earlier times.
