Fetish Carvings

The earliest fetishes date from 600 A.D. and were naturally shaped stones that resembled animals.  Later adornments like shells were added.  Now the stones are handcarved to resemble animals.  They are considered by the carvers to be petrifications of animals and to carry that animals spirit and characteristics, such as courage, which can assist the possessor.  Several informative books about Zuni fetishes are listed below.
