Riding out of California and into Santa Fe, Ray Audain
is a transplant with a new way to view the historic "city different". Ray,
a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was given his first set of water colors when he
was eight. He attended the Philadelphia College of Art and the Studio School of Art.
Although he never took a course in watercolor, that is what he choose to do in his
free time for twenty years while he worked in the artistic side of advertising in
San Francisco.
Inspired by the buildings and scenery in Santa Fe, Ray's
watercolors burst forth in fluid washes accented by splashes of bright colors and negative
white spaces to create a delightful composition. Over the years, Ray has also
developed a unique collage portrait form. His subjects are people he gets to know
well, researching their interests and quirks, and then uses their facial features as a
scaffold for collage work related to their personalities, preferences, occupations and
hobbies.
Ray has shown most recently on the juried 2001 Fourth Avenue
Merchants' Association show in Tucson, Arizona. In 2000, he showed works in the Zia
Arts Festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the Summer Taos Arts and Crafts Fair.
